Biography

Art has always been at the center of Bob's life.  Born in Jacksonville, Florida, he was drawing people and animals at an early age, and in high school often drew portraits for fellow students.  Moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1976, he continued to draw portraits and abstract designs, and began to experiment with oil and acrylic paints.  He has had the good fortune to associate with many creative people across the country, while maintaining steady employment in the printing industry.

One of Bob's first and most lasting influences--- artistic and otherwise---was his maternal grandfather, William S. Chambers (1892-1977), a true Renaissance man and one of the founders of the Boy Scouts of America.  Mr. Chambers was highly regarded as a photographer and very talented with colored pencils.

Another major influence was Steve Lotz, M.F.A., former Professor of Art and Painting at the University of Central Florida.  Mr. Lotz taught Bob design, drawing, and printmaking at Jacksonville University in the early '70's, a productive time for both artists.  As Professor Lotz' student, one of Bob's abstract pencil drawings won a Jurors' Special Mention at a show in Montgomery, Alabama.

In California, Bob has studied art at Cañada College in Redwood City and at College of Marin, and continues to try various mediums and genres.  During the '80s and '90s he drew a number of pencil portraits on commission and a few landscapes.  In 1980 he married his wife Paula (1957-2007), who, along with their two children, remains a prime inspiration.

In his most intimate work, Bob likes to bring imaginary subjects to life by treating them as representational.
